Efficient passenger counting for the optimization of public transport

Public transport authorities need to know the behavior of users of the transport network they manage, in order to adapt the service to demand. Most urban planners have tried to collect this information through mobility studies based on telephone surveys, public transport user questionnaires, and sporadic manual counts inside vehicles. However, the data obtained with these methods are not entirely accurate as they do not cover long periods, and therefore are based on too small a sample of reality.

It is, therefore, necessary to have efficient passenger counting technologies that are capable of offering the most accurate counting data possible, and automatically while the means of transport itself follows its route.

In response to this demand, Azimut's passenger counter is capable of understanding the behavior of passengers over time as a substitute or complement to manual mobility studies, which would allow the identification of patterns, atypical values and variables that may affect the normal flow.

The Azimut system is based on the 3D reconstruction of the image using a camera with 3D sensors that are capable of measuring the intensity and phase of the image detected using Time of Flight (ToF) technology. Azimut hardware has a matrix of more than 76,800 infrared 3D sensors to obtain high precision in the results obtained even in low light and night conditions. This camera is installed in the upper part of the vehicle access door, focusing towards the ground and placed at a height of between 210 and 235 centimeters. After easy calibration of the camera in the optimal place where it is to be used, the system offers a guaranteed accuracy greater than 97% in all cases. The Azimut system can work together with the Azimut video surveillance server for the joint processing of CCTV video surveillance data with integrated counting data in the same Azimut BusBrain remote monitoring platform. In addition, the Azimut system can work autonomously and can be integrated with other systems, by interconnecting the counting system with other third-party systems through an RJ45 Ethernet port.

The main advantages of Azimut's solution are:

Once the counting data is read by the Azimut server or a third party, it is sent over the Internet to a remote server, where it is processed and analyzed by the operator to be applied to transport optimization according to user demand. .

Azimut currently offers several cloud platforms as standard for the interpretation of counting data and for the analysis and optimization of transport by the operator. These remote platforms are integrated with the operator's stop data, and graphically show the counting data that has been taken in all the vehicles, so that the operator can easily view the network usability map , in such a way that it facilitates the operation of the service and the management of the entire fleet to the maximum. The data is also exportable in Excel format for later treatment and processing by the operator.

In addition, the system can be integrated with WiFi Tracking solutions to understand passenger mobility through origin-destination matrices.
