How to avoid embarrassing situations in the management of a wifi onboard

In previous articles we have discussed many issues related to the operation and management of the wireless network on the bus but in this case we will jump right into the risks and unwanted situations that can be place on the use of our wireless network.

Cómo evitar situaciones embarazosas en la gestión de la red wifi en el autobús

Who is responsible for the wifi onboard?

Basically we can say that the owner of the bus is the main responsible regarding the use of the Wifi network installed onboard, basically because all the internet traffic generated by the passengers is managed by the installed router. In that sense it´s very important to inform the passengers about the use terms and conditions of the wifi network in order to be accepted by them. This is the best way to transfer the responsibility of the use to every single passenger connected.

Which is the best way to transfer that responsability?

Using a system able to configure a captive portal , we will be able to preconfigure a web page where will appear all the legal terms of use which have to be accepted by the passenger before start using the wifi network. Due to that reason it´s very important from our point of view to install a wifi onboard provided with this capability, because it´s very import important not only from a marketing point of view because it´s an interesting way of interaction with our passengers but also because it ´s essential in order to transfer that responsibility of use of the network to the passenger.

What web sites can be visited by the passengers?

In the management of the onboard wifi network it´s very important to pay attention to the web sites visited by the passengers during the trip. As we know, it´s not very appropriate to surf certain websites in a bus either because the content is not suitable to be viewed in public or maybe because as owners of the bus we are not interested to allow our passengers to surf certain websites.

When we use the term “ we are not interested “ , we basically speak about surfing websites which required a huge data consumption.  All the wifi onboard is linked to mobile data line which have a monthly traffic limit reason why we have to manage internally the data consumption  in order to don´t leave our bus without connectivity to Internet.

Some of those not recommended websites are pages of software upgrading, streaming of video, application downloading and so on. The use of any of those websites by our passengers will presume an extremely increase of the monthly data consumption, reason why it is very important for the bus operator to install a system able to manage this issue. Avoiding the access to those pages we wil be able to achieve the following:

Can I  deny connections for internet misuse?

The answer is yes. Despite of having controlled and monitored the use of the wifi network, we have a passenger which is misusing the system, what can we do?

In this case it´s important to have a system able to block certain devices after checking that certain devices are not using the system according to the legal terms stablished by the bus operator.
