DRM: How to offer content legally

Generally, there’s a great lack of knowledge about everything involved in the display of content in public areas. In this post we’ll focus on everything we need to know to display movies and TV shows in collective passenger transports.

The 3 fundamental pillars

On the premise that what we want to understand is how the legislation works, we first have to talk about the copyright. Any work, whether it’s audiovisual or not, it has one author or several authors. In the cinematographic sector, we got different authors involved in a single work: directors, writers, composers, etc. The form of economic revenue of these authors is through the concepts concerning the display of these titles.

There are 3 steps we must follow to be within the legality and to avoid being punished when displaying movies and shows.

  • To contract the display license: each content has its own authors. The rights of the movies and shows are exclusive to certain studios. Some examples would be Warner Bros., Sony, and Disney, amongst them all.

In Azimut we offer a complete service of contents, and also, the operator can benefit from the arrangements we’ve reached with different studios, acquiring this license through us.

  • Acquiring a digital file through a lab approved by the studios: For a studio to approve the purchase of a movie or show, these must be treated in a lab that fulfills some established conditions by the studios. It isn’t allowed to display content acquired particularly, for example, buying the DVD in a retail store. Contents’ digital files that we want to display must be acquired through a lab approved by the studios.

Every movie and show Azimut provides has been acquired in a way that won’t have any legal impact on the operator.

  • DRM certification: it exists a piracy-fighting standard once the digital file gets out of the lab. The acronym DRM (Digital Rights Management) establishes that the management of the content has been handled in a safe environment that doesn’t allow the download, reproduction, or copy of this digital file in another device not approved by the studios, thereby respecting the established requirements.

To obtain this certification, both the system and structure of the service must have been approved. It isn’t an easy certification to obtain nor to keep because of the high level of requisites it has. We mustn’t forget that not counting with this certification while displaying content is to seriously harm the work of an author.

It’s important to know that the system we’re using in our vehicles is approved.

In Azimut we work with the Google standard named Widevine, which has been approved by the best studios in the world.

These 3 points must be met at 100% to be able to display movies and shows. If any of these aren’t fulfilled, the operator is susceptible to a penalty. Azimut offers a simple solution, which will provide the piece of mind an operator needs without any influence in the success of its business. Unlike what could be thought, being within the legal framework and offering a service of quality IS possible.

Investing in entertainment is to be a step closer to success.

To count on a very well entertainment offer on-board is the key to remain in the game. There’s a tendency to think that this service is an unnecessary luxury. That thought can be damaging for a company in the bus sector since the entertainment service is becoming something NECESSARY to boost the satisfaction of our passengers, and investing in loyalty. Passengers are increasingly conscious of security, energy, and entertainment topics, being aspects that make them differential factors in service and to improve our strengths against competence.

Azimut counts with a great team of specialists that will make you take a leap in the quality of your services thanks to its exceptional entertainment system.
