Efficient passenger counting for transit optimization

Public transport authorities need to know the behavior of the users of the transport network they manage, in order to be able to match the service with demand. The majority of urban planners have tried to compile this information through mobility studies based on telephone surveys, public transport user questionnaires and sporadic estimates in vehicles. However, the data obtained via these methods are not entirely precise since they do not cover long periods, and are based on too weak a demonstration of reality.

This is why it is necessary to have effective passenger counting technologies that are able to offer the most accurate counting data possible, and automatically, while the means of transport continues on its way.

In response to this request, the Azimut passenger counter is able to understand passenger behavior over time, as a substitute or complement to manual mobility studies, and will identify patterns, outliers and variables that may affect normal attendance.

Azimut's system is based on the 3D reconstruction of the image thanks to a camera with 3D sensors that are able to measure the intensity and the stage of the detected image through Time of Flight (ToF) technology. . The Azimut hardware has a matrix of more than 768,000 infrared 3D sensors to obtain high precision in the results even without much light or at night. This camera is installed on the upper part of the vehicle access door recessed in the ground and is placed at a height between 210 and 235 centimeters. Thanks to an easy calibration of the camera in an optimal area for its use, the system offers an accuracy that guarantees an improvement of 97% in all cases. The Azimut system can work in conjunction with the Azimut video surveillance server for the joint processing of CCTV video surveillance data with counting data integrated into the same platform with Azimut BusBrain remote monitoring. Also, the Azimut system can work autonomously and can be integrated with other systems, thanks to the interconnection of the counting system with other third party systems via an Ethernet RJ45 port.

The main advantages of the Azimut solution are:

Once the counting data has been read by the Azimut server or a third party, it is sent via the Internet to a remote server, where it is processed and analyzed by the operator to be applied to transport optimization according to the demand of the user.

Currently Azimut offers various platforms on the cloud for the interpretation of metering data and for the analysis and optimization of transport by the operator. These remote platforms integrate with the operator's stop data, and graphically show the count data that has been taken on all vehicles, so that the operator can simply view the network usability plan, in order to facilitate the operation of the service and the management of the entire fleet as much as possible. The data can also be exported in Excel format for subsequent treatment and processing by the operator.

Additionally, the system can be integrated with WiFi Tracking solutions to understand passenger mobility through departure-arrival patterns.
