Efficient passenger counting for the optimization of public transport

The public transport regulatory authorities want to know the behavior of the users of the transport network they manage in order to adapt the service to demand. Most urban planners have tried to gather this information through mobility studies based on telephone surveys, public transport user questionnaires and sporadic in-vehicle counts. Despite this, the data obtained through these methods are not entirely accurate since they do not cover long periods and, therefore, are based on too small a sample of reality.

It is therefore necessary to have efficient technologies for counting passengers that are able to provide counting data as accurate as possible, carrying out the work automatically while the same means of transport continues its journey.

In response to this question, Azimut's passenger counter is able to understand passenger behavior over time and acts as a substitute or complement to manual mobility studies; it allows to identify patterns, atypical values and variables that could affect the normal turnout.

The Azimut system is based on the 3D reconstruction of the image by means of a camera with 3D sensors capable of measuring the intensity and phase of the image, detected using Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology. The Azimut hardware has a matrix of more than 76,800 infrared 3D sensors to be able to obtain high accuracy of the acquired results, even in low light or dark conditions. The aforementioned camera is installed in the upper part of the vehicle entrance door, pointed towards the floor and placed at a height between 210 and 235 centimeters. After an easy calibration of the camera in the optimal area where you want to use it, the system offers a guaranteed accuracy of more than 97% in all circumstances. The Azimut system can work by collaborating with the Azimut video surveillance server for the concomitant processing of CCTV video surveillance data with the count data entered in the same Azimut BusBrain remote monitoring platform. Furthermore, the Azimut system can work autonomously and can be integrated with other systems through the interconnection of the counting system with other third party systems thanks to an RJ45 Ethernet port.

The main advantages of the Azimut solution are:

As soon as the count data is read by the Azimut server or by third parties, they will be sent via the Internet to a remote server where they will be processed and analyzed by the operator in order to be applied to the optimization of transport, adapted to the needs of the users.

At the moment Azimut offers various platforms on the cloud for the interpretation of the counting data and for the analysis and optimization of transport by the operator. The aforementioned remote platforms are integrated with the operator's stop data and show in graphic form the counting data that have been obtained from all the vehicles, so that the operator can easily view the usability map of the network to facilitate the maximum performance of the service and management of the entire fleet. The data can also be exported in Excel format for a subsequent section and can be processed by the operator.
