FLIR the safety tool to shorten reaction distance

FLIR THE SAFETY TOOL TO SHORTEN REACTION DISTANCE

Driving on rural roads can be complicated and if we also add night journeys or with reduced visibility due to fog, it becomes even more complicated.

On the road you have to always be attentive and focused. But there are other factors that can influence when avoiding an accident.

Some important facts about reaction distance

Stopping distance = reaction distance + braking distance (danger)

Braking distance (danger) = 1/2 x (speed/10 x speed/10)

When paying attention, the average time between seeing an emergency and putting your foot on the brake is 0.7 seconds.

The distance traveled in that time is the "reaction time distance".
Reaction time distance is affected by three things:

At three different speeds, the minimum stopping distances under optimal conditions, that is, a dry road, excellent brakes, and an attentive driver, are:

Speed Distance
50 km / h 23m
80 km / h 53m
110 km / h 96m

Stopping distances are greatly increased on wet or loose surfaces, when your tires are worn, when you are carrying heavy loads and when your brakes are poor.

In the case of the concentration it is clear that the driver is going to be attentive to the road, but if we can help technologically, especially in those moments when driving becomes so complicated, any precaution that can be taken is necessary.

The most advanced solution to shorten the reaction distance

This is why from Azimut we want to present the Flir thermal camera. The system is simple but powerful and consists of a control unit and a camera that is installed in the front of the vehicle.

How does the FLIR PathfindIR II Camera work?

Any image detected by the camera thermally is seen on the vehicle's own monitor in gray scale. The difference is incredible from seeing nothing to seeing everyone up to about 500 meters away. Being able to see a dangerous curve many meters in advance or see a vehicle stopped on the road can prevent an accident.

This is an important advance but this solution can still help more. The system works by thermal analysis, so specific logarithm plots have been generated to detect pedestrians, cyclists and animals on or near the road.

The visual alarms of these objects will be indicated in yellow boxes to draw attention, warn of any risk and thus be able to avoid an accident.

In the end, the fact that this system warns us of any obstacle more than 200 meters away makes our reaction distance less, so we will avoid unexpected braking and possible accidents.
