The DGT announces the voluntary placement of the blind spot warning sign

The DGT announces the new VEH 21/05 instruction on blind spot signaling

The DGT has just published a few days ago the VEH 21/05 instruction which indicates the voluntary placement of the warning sign of danger of blind spots in passenger transport vehicles with more than 9 seats, goods or waste, among other types.

This instruction places special emphasis on the fact that most of the risk situations in commercial or heavy vehicles are due to the impossibility of seeing the drivers around them closest, which is traditionally known as "blind spots" , due to the size of the vehicles and the lack of systems that allow visualizing the environment of the same.

In recent years, the use of urban spaces in favor of pedestrians has been increasing, so that the number of vulnerable users (VRU) has increased considerably and at the same time this has caused that today more than 80% of traffic accidents on urban roads have this type of user involved.

Intelligent systems as a solution to the problem

Currently, technology already allows this problem to be solved with intelligent systems ( ADAS – Driver Assistance System , BSD – Blind Spot Detection System ) that improve the visibility of blind spots and even detect the presence of people in the vicinity of the vehicle. .

BSD systems provide us with great advantages through cameras for the safety of users and the driver, allowing the blind spots of the vehicle to be viewed from a monitor and even automatically detecting people who are close to it through the use of Artificial Intelligence algorithms. .

These warnings can be received by the driver through a device installed near the driver and it shows an identifying image to differentiate the side where the user is and also an audible warning.

A device can also be included on the outside of the vehicle that allows the users themselves to be warned, so that they can be alerted and thus move away from the vehicle before the accident occurs.

In addition, it is mentioned in the instruction that the DGT is working together with companies and municipalities to promote the installation of this type of systems ADAS - Driver Assistance System and BSD - Blind Spot Detection System in "aftermarket" to improve safety of all citizens.
