Which is the best way to achieve an optimal reception of the Live TV signal in a Bus?

Which are the main aspects we have to take into account in order to achieve an optimal reception of the Live TV Signal in a Bus ? Three are the main factors that we are going to analyse: Size of the antenna, Satellite Footprints and Route Conditions. In this post we will analyse all those three aspects.

It´s important the size of the Satellite Antenna?

Yes It´s important. The size of the satellite antenna required to receive the satellite signal in the bus depends on the power signal of the satellite in the area where the bus is located. This Power is measured in dBW and we can say that the larger diameter of the antenna the better signal reception we are going to achieve.

This is the reason why from our point of viewis better to install a bigger antenna that the recommended by the manufacturers in order to avoid problems in the signal reception like the bad weather of the poor signal reception. Some satellite companies recommend small antennas for the reception of their signals, specially in the case of the most powerful satellites which distribute digital channels. In that case even that a 50 Cm antenna will be enough to receive the signal of a satellite of 50 dBW, it´s better to choose an antenna with some extra cm of diameter.

It´s important to remind that a poor reception due to the installation of too small antenna HAS NO SOLUTION.

Satellite Footprint

The second important aspect that we need to have into account in order to achieve a good satellite reception is the footprint of the chosen satellite in the area where the bus is located. Those Satellite footprints allows us to know perfectly which is the intensity of the signal in the different areas.

In that sense it´s necessary to choose a satellite, analyse which is its footprint and finally check that the antenna specifications in order to be sure that those technical specifications  will allows us to receive the satellite signal in the selected area.

Those are the footprints of the most important satellites in Europe:

ASTRA 1 AT 19.2 E

Astra 1 satellite coverage

We will need a satellite antenna  able to receive a signal of 51dBw.

 ASTRA 2 at 28.2 E

Astra 2 satellite coverage

We will need a satellite antenna  able to receive a signal of 52dBw.

HOTBIRD 13 B

Hotbird satellite coverage

We will need a satellite antenna  able to receive a signal of 51dBw.

HISPASAT 1C at 30.0 W

HISPASAT satellite coverage

We will need a satellite antenna  able to receive a signal of 52dBw.

Route Conditions

It´s interesting sometimes analyse the route selected in order to guarantee a good coverage of the satellite signal. Obviously besides the weather conditions (in cloudy days the intensity of the signal in lower), the orography determine the quality of the signal receive. Narrow roads with trees in the side, valley or mountain routes offer some troubles in order to achieve a good coverage of the signal.

Having in mind all those commented aspects, we will be able to achieve a good signal reception and our customers will be able to enjoy live television during the route.
