DSM: Driver Status Monitor

AZIMUT DSM (Driver Status Monitor) is a type of auxiliary driver warning system based on artificial vision technology. It has the aim of detecting the driver status to avoid unsafe behaviour in driving.
It is most notable for detecting fatigue and preventing falling asleep at the wheel, but it also provides alerts when it detects driver distractions, when they smoke or use mobile phones.

Preventing risks

The AZIMUT DSM System alerts the driver with a sound alarm and a visual alarm, helping them to prevent risk situations. In the images we can see how the camera sensors, thanks to the advanced algorithm based on Deep Learning, use control points (marked in blue) to detect the real status of the driver. Over the images we can see the alerts generated by the system which appear on a device located on the driver’s dashboard.

Distraction and fatigue detection

The system detects distraction of the driver when they look away from the road. As can be seen in the image, it also works when the driver is wearing glasses. The system detects anomalous behaviour of the driver. When the driver keeps their eyes closed for longer than the defined time, the system alerts the driver with a sound and visual alarm.

Effective prevention

The result is a very effective prevention of serious accidents. There is also an alert for if the driver covers the camera.

Facial recognition algorith

The Azimut driver status monitor system uses a camera to capture the driver’s image and establish their condition, based on visual analysis thanks to an advanced, very precise algorithm. Deep Learning provides continuous improvement of the system’s precision.

The system emits an alert to the driver when it detects drowsiness, carelessness and distractions such as mobile phone use or looking away from the road.

High performance technology.

The ultrasensitive infrared camera detects all aspects of the driver’s face during the day or at night. It allows risk situations to be established and predicted with great precision.

The system is especially precise in the detection of movement of the eyelids to avoid potential danger caused by drowsiness. For example, if the eye is not fully closed, the system perfectly detects the situation and does not generate an alert. It is just as precise when the driver is wearing glasses.


The system can be connected to an on-board server on the vehicle which records everything the camera captures.
