Update of contents of an SEI

Digital content is, along with the system's own reliability, the two pillars on which the success of an SEI is based. Nothing is more unsatisfactory than sitting down and seeing the same offer that we had last week, the previous month and during the three months before. It happens to us in a SEI of a coach and before any entertainment offer.

For this reason, we have to propose an update of content suitable for our use of the car and the Passenger's profile. To put 3 very different cases:

Updating content can be done by different means, and we will look for our SEI to have a means that suits our needs. The most representative are:

a) By replacement of a hard drive. For this we must have a spare disk, on which we will load the new contents, and we will replace it on board. It is the safest and most practical means, with 3 aspects to consider:

  1. It requires that a person from the Carrier dedicate himself to it, when in reality he must dedicate himself to what is his business: the transport of Passengers. It is added that a transport company does not usually have an adequate profile in its workforce, which is logical: a digital content distributor does not have a good traffic manager among them either!
  2. To ensure 100% that there will be no problems (the software always has goblins hidden!), it is convenient to have a team in our offices to verify its operation as expected, before going on board and realizing that something is not right. our convenience. But this… has a price.
  3. When the fleet is large and dispersed, an exchange of disks is generated that entails an administrative burden and a difficulty in ensuring that the appropriate contents are in the car at the necessary time.

The most reliable solution and the one we recommend is to select a manufacturer that provides us with this service regularly, reliably and flexibly.

b) Remote update by WiFi or 3G/4G. This is what the leading Manufacturers are working on, with launches expected in 2015. It allows the carrier itself or a third party (content manager) to directly manage the content on request. It requires a remote management platform (“Cloud”), from which to load and monitor status. The contents are updated on the selected day, in the cars that are desired... and in short, it allows the carrier to download its own content management if it hires a third party, and in any case eliminates the need to physically change discs .

Between both options we will choose the one that best suits our needs, being clear that a large fleet (more than 20-25 cars) will find clear advantages in option 2, while with a few cars option 1 can have a reasonable balance for its simplicity.
