Why is a DRM system necessary?

There is a clear and concise answer, without a DRM system movies cannot be streamed (nor any other content). Without a DRM system the transport operator will not have a license for reproduction and may be taken to court for infringement of intellectual property.

Although it may not seem like it, digital content (movies, series, news, music) has an owner (what is technically called having the rights), it is not the transport operator, but the one who produced them (film and music study, publishing houses) and even if we buy them they do not belong to us. We have the right to reproduce them in public, but not to copy or distribute them.

Content without associated protection traveling over a Wi-Fi network can be easily hacked by a moderately skilled hacker.

DRM or digital rights management systems are used precisely to prevent this content from being downloaded, copied and therefore causing financial damage to the owners. As there may be several different systems, and to avoid breakdowns, the studies have chosen to approve or certify some of them, generally belonging to large software multinationals (Google, Microsoft, Marlin corp.).

So, when a content distribution platform wants to distribute protected content, it must incorporate into its storage and reproduction process a software architecture that includes DRM digital rights management based on a product approved by the producers.

Technically DRM is content encryption using a cryptographic key which is decrypted on playback. Normally, the key is generated of form external to the own reproducer, that is to say with a server of keys.

Incorporating DRM into your architecture is not straightforward, requires product accreditation as well as evaluation of various factors such as overall architecture and type of business.

If you are a transport operator, and your provider does not have DRM or does not have any DRM partnership, it is better not to trust this provider, or simply ignore it.
