Measuring the success of my WiFi system on the bus

Measuring the passenger success of our in-bus Wi-Fi offer is in many cases not easy, because most Wi-Fi systems on the market do not have measuring instruments that allow you to have indicators of usage and efficiency.

Why is it interesting to measure the success of our WiFi system in the bus? The answer is simple: it is a service that costs the company money and that is why it is important to know on the one hand whether the expense is justified and on the other whether we offer the service level that the passenger demands.

Know the user to measure success

There are two clear explanations for low passenger use of a Wi-Fi system on the bus:

This shows that it is important to know exactly the users of our WiFi system and thus the justification for the investment.

Duration of the sessions

Another important factor, in addition to the number of passengers connecting, to measure the success of our on-board Wi-Fi system is the length of the sessions, that is, the time the passenger is connected to the internet through our service .

There may be a lot of new users connected, but if the sessions are short in duration compared to the length of the journey , we can identify that we are failing somewhere. For example: if there are one-hour routes and a large percentage of the sessions last less than 20 minutes, this is undoubtedly a bad figure for a positive evaluation of our WiFi system in the bus. It is therefore important to be able to measure and analyze the length of our passengers' sessions, in conjunction with the length of the journey.

Repetition of the users

This indicator is very useful. Knowing how many of our travelers commit to our system more than once, and most importantly, how many times they repeat, is undoubtedly an indicator that can help us measure more precisely the passenger's positive rating . We say “can help”, because if the transport service providing the vehicle does not normally carry the same passengers, this indicator is of no use to us.

Recoup the investment

In conclusion, we have seen that measuring the success of the Wi-Fi systems in the bus is very valuable, as the bus operators make major investments in equipment and monthly service to provide on-board Wi-Fi, and these have to be recouped. This means firstly that we have to make sure that passengers use it as much as possible and satisfactorily and secondly that we take advantage of this large amount of users who are online in our Wi-Fi networks.
